The story contained within
“FLOWERS OF THE GODS” starts at the very beginning of time with
a dark planet, destined to become the Earth, wandering through
the star constellations in the heavens.
Basic naked-eye astronomical
maps are included in this and subsequent books, so that readers
may use them to observe our night sky and follow both the course
of events in the heavens as well as the exciting action on Earth.

Having set the scene, the tale
goes on to relate the backgrounds and domestic lives of the gods
and goddesses of Greek and Roman mythology who reside in those
star constellations, but in a much more
informal manner. You’ve never heard gossip like it! For
instance, the seven daughters of Atlas are encountered living
'in a small celestial abode' (complete with garden gnomes) on
the fringes of our galaxy. Their mother has run off with a
Vulcan door-to-door salesman and the girls (minor goddesses in
fact) make their father’s life a nightmare with their unruly
'terrible teen' antics. Zeus, king of the gods, livid at their
anti-social behaviour, grounds them in the palace of the
Pleiades star constellation:
The Pleiades Constellation
The blue light is starlight
scattered by space dust. The Pleiades constellation is 410 light years
away from us.
If you do not know what a ‘light year’ is
ask Electra:

ELECTRA
The youngest of the minor
goddesses, Electra, was studious and less flighty than her
sisters with a rather jaundiced view of the “girl mad” gods in
the heavens. Whilst her six sisters are slipping off from the
palace to have a good time, she studies for a couple of hundred
years, taking the godly equivalent of GCSEs in the subjects of
planetary conservation and development. Electra impresses Zeus
with her efforts of self-improvement. Whilst Zeus locks up her
sisters, he rewards Electra by gifting the dark wandering planet
to her. He places the planet in our Milky Way Galaxy and has it
turned into the beautiful Earth that we know today.

ZEUS
To carry out this
transformation of the planet, Zeus sends the winged horse,
PEGASUS, to fetch the goddess
Mother
Nature to his
palace and he enlists her help.

Mother
Nature creates many landscapes and sprinkles wild flowers
across the Earth’s surface.

MOTHER NATURE
*Goddesses have been the subject
of literature since time immemorial. The poetry of
an acquaintance of mine - the Derbyshire poet,
Eric Ashford,
is no exception. See his inspirational work, 'Exploring

The planet becomes the ‘garden
of the universe.’
Finally, Mother Nature plants the
GOLDEN
BLUEBELL in the heart of England:

The divine power vested in this
flower by Mother Nature, gave the GOLDEN
BLUEBELL
total control over the four seasons of the year and
all her wild flowers across the planet. And so the seasons
moved onwards; with the soft delicate steps of spring; the proud
majestic pace of summer; the slow, restful stroll of autumn and
the stamping march of winter:
Silently, the
GOLDEN BLUEBELL
did Mother Natures bidding in the cycle of time and
space and life
continued to blossom across the Earth. For, as one life
ends, another begins:
This was the wish of the

Of the many wild flowers that
Mother Nature planted in Britain, some were special white
flowers that she designated to act as ‘guardian-angels’. They
were tasked with keeping watch over her floral children and the
Golden Bluebell and
protect them from evil. Because of the guardian duties she had
placed upon them, the goddess named them WHITE ARCHANGELS.
Mother Nature also bestows
upon each WHITE ARCHANGEL a unique capability,
which is revealed later in the book. This has amazing
consequences for a twin teenage brother and sister in the
distant future of our present time!

The common British wild flower

All is at peace with the Earth
until a dispute between the goddess Athena and one of the gorgon
sisters, Medusa, leads the gorgon to set out on a path of blind
revenge to destroy the beautiful wild flowers. She devises an
insidious and violent plan to do this. The fact that the Earth
will be destroyed along with the wild flowers is of no
consequence to her. Medusa is assisted by her new
friend, Hecate, goddess of witches:

HECATE
However, an unrelated incident
has an eventual influence on Medusa’s plan and even more so on
the futures of the people involved!
Flos, a street urchin, is an
orphan girl living in ancient Greece. She has a natural gift for
rearing and nurturing wild flowers. Flos often sells them to
city women to decorate their hair. This helps her survive on the
streets.
Flos is befriended by Princess
Andromeda, who often sneaks her into the palace grounds to give
Flos food and shelter. Uncontrollable events lead to Andromeda
being put forward for sacrifice to save the city and population
from destruction by a terrible sea monster named
Cetus:

CETUS
The beast has already visited
the city once and wreaked havoc and death.
Andromeda is imprisoned in the
palace tower awaiting sacrifice to Cetus:

ANDROMEDA LOCKED IN THE PRISON TOWER
All she can do is pray each
night to the gods that her lover, Perseus, who is far away with
his army engaged in battle, somehow finds out and comes to save
her. However, it is not the gods who take a hand - it is young
Flos, the ‘Flower Girl.’

FLOS
Flos obtains Andromeda’s ring,
as proof of her message to Perseus, and sets off to run herself
near-to-death in a marathon of four days and nights to bring his
help to her beloved Andromeda. By day, the sun beats down on
her, but by night, Artemis, goddess of the moon, smiles down
upon Flos and lights her way:

ARTEMIS
Near to death from exhaustion,
Flos (with help from a mysterious creature) finally reaches Perseus and delivers her desperate plea for
help. She gives him Andromeda’s ring as proof of her plea.

The return distance for Perseus
to reach
Andromeda is long, yet the deadline for her sacrifice to Cetus
is short. In any case, how can one man defeat a beast that has
already slaughtered thousands? He appeals to the gods and one
friendly goddess answers. Athena gives him a task to execute
that could save his betrothed. By chance, in carrying it out, Perseus unknowingly inhibits Medusa’s plans and
at the same time also frees a ‘nice-but-dim’ enslaved dragon named
Delphyne. The dragon flies
him to arrive at the sacrifice just in time and aids Perseus in
Andromeda’s rescue:

DELPHYNE
At a grand ceremony before the
city population, Andromeda gifts her ring to the little street
urchin to seal their friendship forever. But there are no bare
feet and ragged clothes for Flos now. She is raised to the royal
household and attired accordingly:

From then on, the ceremonial
ring becomes known as ‘Andromeda’s Friendship Ring.’ The ring’s
symbolic meaning of deep and lasting friendship is revered
amongst the gods and the people alike. The city jewellers are
kept pretty busy after that, because every citizen wants one!
However, the circumstances of
how the ring came into Andromeda’s possession were mysterious to
say the least and there is more to the ring than just its
symbolism. Some months before these events, Andromeda had been
sitting by the sea shore, daydreaming of Perseus:

She spotted a poverty-stricken,
wizened old woman drowning in the sea. The grimalkin had slipped
off the rocks whilst picking cockles to survive. Andromeda dived
in and dragged her to safety. The woman was more grateful than
Andromeda could ever know and gave her the ring in deep
gratitude. When Andromeda queried the meaning behind the ring’s
strange pattern, the woman replied: “It is your destiny.”
The woman then disappeared, leaving not one footprint leading
anywhere in the wet sand:

As Flos moves towards
adulthood, she spends her time at the palace helping other
orphans and street children. Then one day, the three little
goddesses of Fate (
Clotho, Lachesis
and
Atropos )
stick their noses into her affairs:

CLOTHO LACHESIS & ATROPOS
They
decide that the old phrase: ‘All roads lead to Rome’ should be
applied to the future of Flos. She meets and marries a Roman
soldier named Cassius. Eventually she accompanies her Roman
Commander husband in the invasion of Britannia. After the
conquest they settle and farm a villa in the heart of England.
She gives birth to a twin son and daughter – Paulus Cassius and
Andromeda Flos. From then on, the middle names of Flos and
Cassius are carried down through history. Cassius passes on his
skills with the sword to his son and Flos passes on her skills
with wild flowers and Andromeda’s Friendship Ring to her
daughter. The children grow and marry and Flos, Cassius, and historical
events are lost in the passage of time with the intermarrying of
her descendants to the following Saxon, Viking and Norman
invaders of Britain.

The centuries pass by
uneventfully up to the present time. Mother Nature’s guardians
of her floral children, the WHITE ARCHANGELS, keep faithful
watch over the other wild flowers and the
Golden Bluebell.
Then
Mankind makes a blunder which, unknown to them, reactivates the
evil chain of events that was started off by Medusa in ancient
times. Looking down from her heavenly home in the Pleiades
constellation, Electra foresees the demise of the Earth and the
obliteration of her very own planet, but she is helpless to
intervene. The bright light of her star in the Pleiades constellation dims with
sadness.
The WHITE ARCHANGELS see this
and sense its danger for the wild flowers and the
Golden
Bluebell. What the danger is and in what form, they
do not know. However, from information picked up off the gossip
grapevine, which runs amongst the wild flowers up and down
Britain, there are two young people living on an inner-city
council estate up north, who may be able to help them.
They are a teenage twin brother
and sister named St John Cassius and Poppy Flos. Their mother
had a loving, natural way with wild flowers and she named her
children after two of them:

Mum paid for St John to attend
fencing classes after he had shown a natural ability with a
sword. He was also very keen on amateur astronomy and anything
to do with Greek and Roman mythology. Poppy also had a natural
ability with wild flowers and dedicated her time to their
nurturing with as much keenness as her mum.
Where their middle names,
Cassius and Flos, came from no one knew. It had always been a
family tradition since time immemorial. Similarly, no one could
remember the origins of the ring, with its mysterious pattern,
that Poppy now wore. Again, it had been a family tradition for
it to be passed from mother to daughter.
The WHITE ARCHANGELS
knew it
was imperative to get the twins down to Leicestershire, in the
heart of England, where the Golden Bluebell had been
secretly planted by Mother Nature thousands of years ago and
enlist their talents to save it from danger. The
WHITE
ARCHANGELS devised a plan which, with the help of a volunteer
poisonous toadstool, would turn the mundane lives of Poppy and
St John upside down.

DEATH HAD STARTED!
